Morrow County Honors Fallen Deputy, Demands Justice in Ongoing Case

MARENGO, Ohio — The resolve of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves remains unbroken, even as they grieve the Memorial Day shooting death of Deputy Daniel Weston Sherrer, a dedicated officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Deputy Sherrer, 31, was tragically killed on May 26 while responding to a domestic violence call that rapidly escalated.

Deputy Sherrer, a four-year veteran of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, was widely respected for his commitment to public safety. Sheriff John Hinton fondly remembered him as a “godsend” who “always had a smile on his face” and deeply “loved this community.”

Reports from the scene indicate Deputy Sherrer courageously approached a residence on County Road 26 in Marengo, where Brian Michael Wilson, 53, was reportedly armed and agitated following a domestic dispute. Despite explicit threats from Wilson, Deputy Sherrer continued his efforts to de-escalate the perilous situation. Gunfire was exchanged, resulting in Deputy Sherrer sustaining fatal injuries.

A second deputy, who had also responded to the initial 911 call, arrived swiftly after the shots were fired. This deputy discovered Deputy Sherrer gravely wounded and, with the immediate assistance of a nearby neighbor who is a firefighter, began heroic efforts to render aid, attempting to save his life. The same deputy then successfully took Wilson into custody at the scene; Wilson had also been wounded during the exchange of gunfire.

Morrow County Prosecutor Andrew Wick has unequivocally stated his intention to pursue the death penalty against Brian Michael Wilson. Wilson has been indicted on 14 counts, including two counts of aggravated murder, and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His bond was significantly increased to $9 million, reflecting the gravity of the charges and the commitment to ensuring justice. A visiting judge, James L. Kimbler, has been assigned to the case after two Morrow County judges recused themselves due to conflicts of interest. Wilson’s next pretrial hearing is scheduled for August 25. Prosecutor Wick emphasized his commitment, stating, “if you harm a member of law enforcement in Morrow County, that you will be put in jail… and that you will then go to prison for as long as we possibly can make it.”

The unwavering support for Deputy Sherrer and the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office was powerfully demonstrated by the hundreds of law enforcement officers from across Ohio who attended his Celebration of Life ceremony. This unity underscores the tight-knit bonds within the law enforcement community and their collective dedication to upholding justice.

The ongoing investigation into the shooting is being diligently conducted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Deputy Sherrer is survived by his parents, sister, and fiancée. His profound sacrifice serves as a stark and painful reminder of the constant dangers faced by those who bravely stand on the front lines to protect and serve their communities.
