The incident began at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, when patrol officers were dispatched to a trailer residence on Lenox Avenue after multiple 911 callers reported a man actively discharging a firearm. Responding officers observed Benvenutti, armed with a gun, standing on the front porch of the trailer. He retreated inside before officers could make contact.
Officers issued repeated commands for Benvenutti to disarm and surrender, but he refused. A judge later authorized an arrest warrant, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was deployed to the scene.
Negotiators continued efforts through the night to secure Benvenutti’s peaceful surrender. At one point, the suspect exited the trailer, fired a single round into the ground in the presence of SWAT officers, then re-entered the residence. Authorities say the standoff persisted into the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 14.
According to JSO, the confrontation escalated shortly after Benvenutti emerged from the trailer a final time. Detectives McCranie and Lyons approached him on foot, while Detective Crews remained in a nearby armored vehicle. The suspect allegedly discarded a stick he had been holding, then drew a concealed firearm from his waistband and advanced toward another trailer.
All three detectives discharged their service rifles, striking Benvenutti. Officers immediately moved in to provide emergency medical assistance. Paramedics later pronounced Benvenutti dead at the scene.
No officers were injured during the incident.
As standard protocol, the State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation to determine the legality of the officers’ actions. JSO will subsequently complete an internal administrative review to assess whether agency policies were followed. A Response to Resistance Board will then evaluate the findings and submit recommendations to the Sheriff.
Sheriff’s Office officials said the release of footage and timeline is part of the agency’s commitment to transparency while investigative conclusions remain pending.
