SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police Department has released body camera footage and additional details regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday, May 9, 2025, in the 2600 block of North Loop 1604 West.

According to SAPD, the incident began shortly after noon when a patrol officer was dispatched to the area for a reported theft. Upon arrival, the officer encountered 24-year-old Sheldon Butts outside the location. Police say Butts immediately became physically combative and attacked the officer.

In an effort to de-escalate, the officer deployed pepper spray, but it failed to subdue the suspect. During the struggle, Butts allegedly attempted to disarm the officer by reaching for his firearm. In response, the officer drew his weapon and fired several rounds, striking Butts.

Emergency medical assistance was rendered at the scene, and Butts was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The officer, identified as 23-year SAPD veteran Officer Mark Castillo (Badge #1231), sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

No other officers or civilians were injured during the encounter.

Per department policy, Officer Castillo has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

Both the SAPD Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting parallel investigations. The findings from these inquiries will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office for an independent legal review.

SAPD officials emphasized that this remains an active investigation and that no further details will be released at this time.
